Engineers Upset by The Borough

Are The Borough are becoming a bit of a bogey team for Engineers? The Borough started well and opened up a handy 11 pin lead after the first leg. Leg two was tied before The Borough extended their lead to 20 after leg three. Engineers then fought back by winning the next leg but still found themselves adrift by 14 pins going into the final legs. The Borough bowling first, produced another good leg score of 65, to leave Engineers wanting 80 to win the game. But despite managing to score 71, the highest leg score of the game, they fell short but had the consolation of taking another leg point and extend their lead at the top of the table although closest rivals, Lodge Farmers, have a game in hand.

Leading the way for The Borough, now third in the table (their best ever league position), was Julian Workman with 46, the highest individual game score so far this season and which included a 17 pin stack, another highest figure so far.. Team mate Ian Foreman chipped in with 41 and Charlie Few 36. For Engineers, Brandon Kelso made 40, Mark Ganderton 38, and Joe Kelso 36.

The other game of the week ended with Jumbo Jet Set earning a season’s first win while for opponents Bernie’s Bolts, their consolation points haul moved them level at the bottom of the league. There was little between the teams initially. The Bolts were two pins ahead after leg one but then two pins behind after leg two. Jumbo Jets extended their lead to nine pins after leg three thanks largely to a 12 pin stack from Darren Summers. In leg four, although Mike Smeed for Jumbo Jets also made a 12 stack, it couldn’t prevent The Bolts reducing their deficit to seven pins. Bowling first in the last legs, Jumbo Jets Smeed made yet another stack of 12 pins as they finally left The Bolts wanting 75 to win. The Bolts started well with the first five bowlers scoring 36 with Paul Blayney making a 13 stack but the other five bowlers couldn’t maintain the pace and finally conceded the last leg point to Jumbo Jets.

For Jumbo Jets, Summers finished with 42, and Smeed and Mick Stanton 39 each, Best for Bernie’s Bolts were Blayney with 43, Lewis McSweeney 36 and Craig McSweeney 33.
