Engineers Extend League Lead
The chasing teams, Nomads and Lodge Farmers, lost closely fought games which allowed Engineers to pull away at the top of the table with a comfortable win over Jumbo Jets. Engineers took maximum points, but the Jets were left wondering why they couldn’t score three more pins in three of the legs to gain consolation points. Engineers made the game safe by winning legs two and three by a total of 21 pins. Main contributions for the winners came from Luke Saunders, Mark Ganderton and Joe Kelso with 38, 37, & 36 respectively. For Jumbo Jets, Dennis Compton again top scored making 39 (incl 13 stack), and there was 35 each from Liz Rowberry and Dan Hill.
Only four pins separated The Borough and Nomads in a high scoring game with the lead changing hands twice before the exciting last leg scores from each team. After leg three, The Borough looked favourites when leading by 11 pins only to go four pins adrift following a good fourth leg score from Nomads. Nomads then made another good score in their last leg, and could be excused for thinking ‘job done’ when leaving The Borough a daunting 74 to win. But, boosted by a Michelle Court 14 stack, The Borough made the highest leg score of the game, and took the leg to run out as winners. Debutant Rob Bruce for the Borough made 43 (incl 14 stack), backed up by Scott Few with 37, and 36 each from Julian Workman & Steve Court. Nomads best scorers were Mac Eaton (15 stack) and Geoff Loat (11 stack) in totals of 40, and Andrew Coombs 39 (incl 14 stack).
Lodge Farmers didn’t get going until after the first three legs as a rejuvenated C&G Show team built a 12 pin lead in a low scoring game every bit as exciting as The Borough/Nomads clash. Lodge Farmers did claw back a pin after leg four, before making a good last leg score of 68 pins. But that left C&G wanting only 58 for another welcome win. And despite an odd stumble, last man Dave Orton kept his nerve to get C&G over the line. Orton finished with 34 pins, as did Rich Fisher (incl 12 stack) but top scoring was Neil Jay with 35. There were scores of 37 each from Glyn Morley and Frank Morris for Lodge Farmers and 36 from Tim Jones.
